In conceiving this exhibition shared by 3 prominent Washington, DC-based galleries, curator Milena Kalinovska writes, "The concept of the utopia in the everyday reflects on the themes of the artists in this exhibition. Their individual projects and actions, which incorporate and question interior design, product design, and architectural and social structures, reconsider domestic, social, and political environments and serve as devices for communication between art and the viewer. These artists are engaged in transforming the space and reviving context at the same time as they are concerned with the place and function of art and its interaction with the viewer. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 18 from 7 - 9 pm.

Artists in this exhibition draw on the experimentation of the 1960s and 1970s in that they reconsider the object of art and its diverse relationships to space and environment. Conceptual artists, as they are commonly described, moved into a realm where art, objects, and actions responded to and included the outside world. Similarly, the contemporary artists in this exhibition have addressed issues concerning sites, materials, and actions, and the position of art in how it relates to the outside world.
Whether artists respond to, or make installations that transform our thinking about architecture, design, social environments, or communities, their projects are sites for dialogues that offer a variety of aesthetic and social experiences: from experiments in living addressing innovative "personal spaces," to architecturally subversive projects motivated by societal critiques, to printed materials as sites for engagement, to objects as "connectors" furthering the desire for relationship, to actions meant to build communities. Both literally and conceptually, Other than Art concentrates on works of art that evoke reconsideration of the interaction between art and society."

Milena Kalinovska has curated over forty exhibitions in the last twenty years. She is originally from Prague, Czech Republic; educated in England and Canada, and has worked predominantly in England and the USA. She has developed exhibitions with artists such as James Coleman, Tony Cragg, Philip-Lorca di Corcia, Richard Deacon, Nan Goldin, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Antony Gormley, Gary Hill, Rebecca Horn, Isaac Julien, On Kawara, Annette Messager, Mariko Mori, Cildo Meireles, Bruce Nauman, Nancy Spero, Kara Walker, and Lawrence Weiner among others. Recently she curated William Christenberry, Changing Landscape The Source Revisited for the Kreeger Museum, Beyond Preconceptions: The Sixties Experiment which traced the "emergence of a new artistic sensibility capable of responding to the practical and theoretical crumbling of the Modernist project," which originated at the National Gallery in Prague and toured to Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, MoMA in Sao Paulo, and Berkeley Art Museum among other venues. She was responsible for the North and South American sections of the Gwangju Biennale in Korea and is a member of the Art21 Advisory Council, the Emmy nominated PBS series focusing exclusively on contemporary visual artists working in the United States today.
