Castillo
Internationally acclaimed artist Mónica
Castillo presents her noted video, Dancer’s Self-Portrait, in which a ballet dancer appears in
a space surrounded
by a mint green plastic curtain. Dressed in a leotard, she performs eight
classic ballet positions through slow transitions while her body splashes yellow,
green, brown and pink paint from jars tied to her wrists, waist and ankles. After
some arabesques, the dancer, who began immaculate, finishes her dance
sequence stained from head to toe. The environment is covered by the paint
in a
gestural performative action that is accompanied by a vivid sound track of
toe shoes and paint hitting the floor. Castillo is well-known for her conceptual
works, derived from painting, that address the complex issues of identity.
